BMX is an acronym for Bicycle Motocross. BMX bikes are specially designed with a low profile cromoly frame, single speed gearing, gyro brake system for repeated turns of the handlebar without tangling the brake lines, and axle pegs for additional foot placement during tricks. BMX bikes usually have 18 to 24-inch wheels, with 20-inch wheels being the average.
The sport officially involves racing, but Freestyle BMX involves performing tricks. Freestyle BMX includes five distinct disciplines: Street, Park, Vert, Dirt, and Flatland.
BMX bikes gained popularity in California during the 1970s. Teenagers would try to imitate motorcross by converting their Schwinn Sting Ray bikes into BMX bikes by putting knobby tires and motorcycle handlebars on them. The bikes caught on and Racing and Freestyle became incredibly popular throughout the world. The first commercial BMX bike manufacturers were Redline, R & R Racing Products, Mongoose, and Webco.
BMX Races are usually divided up in classes by age and skill level such as Novice, Intermediate, Expert, “A” Pro, and “AA” Pro. The races are short and fast and require bursts of speed and strength and good bike handling skills. In Freestyle events, points are awarded for performing stunts. Extreme aerial stunts can be very dangerous and should always be accompanied by a helmet and other protective gear.
